Several strange and downright weird Japanese fetishes
Written by Jeff

Japan has many fetishes some people consider...strange

How many of these weird Japanese fetishes did you know?

Despite what I say about not stereotyping races, it is undeniable that there are some fetishes that are deemed quite uniquely Japanese. Although they may not be limited to something that only appeals to Japanese men, most of these have only really been given a specific name in Japanese. Here, we take a look at some of the ones that we are allowed to publish about without getting an 18+ rating.

Also, these are merely fetishes that some people have, so please do not assume that all Japanese males crave the following aspects.

Note: We do not endorse the objectification of women or men, and we are only publishing this content to spread knowledge on Japanese trends.

1 - Zettai Ryouiki / 絶対領域 (Absolute field/ absolute territory)

The ‘absolute zone’ refers to the tiny thigh space between a mini-skirt, and knee high socks.
Although not everyone is quite as picky, there is an internet consensus of the golden ratio needed to qualify as a true absolute field.

Golden Ratio:
Skirt length - 4
Thigh Space - 1
Length of socks - 2.5
(above the knee)

I don’t know who wouldn’t find it attractive even if you were slightly off,
but I guess if the Internet says so...

2 - Ponytail Zettai ryouiki / ポニーテール絶対領域 (Ponytail absolute territory)

Just when you thought things couldn’t get weirder….
Borrowing the name from the Absolute field mentioned previously, I now present you with the Ponytail Absolute field/ absolute area. This is still a rather minor fetish compared to its naming parent, but it has gained enough of a following to receive a nickname nonetheless.

The Ponytail Zettai Ryouiki refers to the small triangle of naked skin visible after a women ties her hair back, but leaves two strips of long hair remaining to fall down the side of her face. (By the way, this is not just for fashion’s sake, but also because having enough of this hair can also help make your face look smaller which is considered ‘kawaii’ or cute in japan.)

At least staring into a girl’s hair would be less creepy than staring at her thighs… maybe?

3 - Zettai kuuiki - 絶対空域 (Absolute Airspace)/ Sankaku chitai - 三角地帯 (Triangle Zone)

Although at first glance, this is deemed similar to the ‘thigh gap’ that has been strangely dominating Western Social media, the Absolute airspace or triangle zone is fundamentally different in that it praises having a healthy amount of fat, rather than being unhealthily skinny.

The absolute airspace refer to the tiny triangle of space between a female’s…. nether region, and where her thighs meet, unlike the thigh gap which encourages the thighs being so skinny they don’t touch at all.

(Editor’s note)
Be very careful not to confuse this with the Delta Zone (デルタゾーン) which refers to the accidental view of a female’s undergarments due to her sitting with a mini-skirt (which we refuse to show you, for obvious reasons).

4 - Ahiruguchi - アヒル口 (Duck lips/ Duck face)

Whilst in English, the duck face is an expression that anyone can make, by pressing their lips together to pout, the Japanese one is slightly different.

Have you ever used the :3 emoji?
Duck lips are a natural look in which you have a very pronounced philtrum or medical cleft.
(Basically the middle part of the lip)
Although you can somewhat fake this look by pushing your lips together, the actual natural occurence is what we are referring to here.

One thing to note here is that this feature isn’t limited to females and can also be extended to males. As a result, celebrities we can use as examples of having duck lips can be female like former AKB48 member Itano Tomomi (板野友美) and Babymetal’s Nakamoto Suzuka (中元すず香), or male like Kanjani Eight’s Nishikido Ryo (錦戸亮) and Hey! Say! JUMP's Yamada Ryousuke (山田涼介).

(Editor’s note)
This is not to be confused with the sparrow mouth/ chirp mouth (チュン顔), which was a popular facial expression a few years back, which considered of slightly parting your lips and making your eyes bigger.

It seems to be a recurring theme here, but Japan has some really strange trends from time to time...
